Elaine Bryan received the 2011 Counselor of the Year Award for Region V1 from the Georgia School Counselors Association (GSCA) on Thursday, Nov 4, 2010 at the Classic Center Ball Room in Athens, GA. Elaine is the first recipient of Caribbean Heritage to receive this honor in the state of Georgia.

This is the second monetary award that she has received for outstanding work with students in Atlanta, Georgia; her first monetary award was from Sony Television when she received the Judge Glenda Hatchett Mentor Award. Bill Smith Executive Director of PROBE who presented Bryan with the check will also give financial support to students who attend Georgia schools and as the Region V1 Counselor of the Year she will have the opportunity to choose the grant recipients.

Among the over 400 guests and supporters were: Gregory Bryan, Kathy Reed of Leadership Sandy Springs and mother of Bryan’s student Peden Henderson, Rose Mary Glean, Psychologist for DeKalb County School System, Kaye Umeakunne of the University of Pittsburg Gastroenterology Department, Dr. Daliah Pottinger (Jamaican Educator), Caribbean Radio/TV  personality, Joan Savoury, Joyce Ricks (Counselor from Gwinnett County School System), DeKalb County School System Simon Scholars Program Executives Dr. Turk and Ms. Byrom,  Head Counselor Cheryl Hudson, former counselor of the year Rose Brock and Danny Roper from Jamaica.

Bill Smith, PROBE Executive Director presented the cash award and Demetra Williams (GSCA President) and Julie Spires (Professional Recognition Chair) presented Elaine Bryan with the trophy for the 2010-11 GSCA Counselor of the Year for Region V1.
